FAQ and General Information
This page is about our most Frequently Asked Questions, to help our customers with the information they may need; to make informed choices quicker, without having to contact us beforehand.
What are the cake base options? What about fillings?
Vanilla or chocolate flavoured are the cake base options. The cake base is a sponge cake, which is sometimes without filling especially when it is single layer. However all the sweetness is on top, with some of the cakes being generously layered with whipped up butter icing. If you want a cake with a large amount of thick, buttery sweetness, you may prefer to select a cake with visible generously layered whipped up icing, instead of a single layer fondant. People have different preferences and this has to be remembered, so that clients make an informed choice that they will be satisfied with. Some of our competitors offer a variety of very moist fillings, but that is not our focus. If you study what we offer in general, and compare it to other bakeries, you will find that we have our own niche, in comparison. Please keep this in mind before you make your selection, to avoid disappointment, so that you are satisfied with your choice that matches personal preference.
How many tier cakes do you bake?
Two tier cakes are the maximum we bake at present, because three tiers need significant structural support, and also pose a challenge for our clients to handle with the sufficient care needed to ensure they stay in tact. We had baked three tier cakes in the past, but they pose significant anxiety and risk for the client to transport, that we cannot take accountability for, nor produce at present.
Where can I find more information about a particular cake?
The Price List page contain more individual information about particular cakes, like portions per cake, average portions per cake, price and physical cake size measurements in centimeters. Some cake images also deliberately contain information about the amount of size and portions per cake, because it is difficult to ascertain this information from the picture of the cake itself. Please also note that the indicated portion size is only a guideline, and all depends on the size that the client cut. In the online order form we provide you with the option of either purchasing one of our boxes, or bringing your own. We recommend that you buy the appropriate boxes from Cakes Net for the protection of your selection.
How do I order a cake? Ordering from a mobile device?
Visit the category page that best describes the cake that you are looking for, or use the SEARCH PAGE.
When visiting this website from a desktop computer, click on the image of the cake that you would like to order. This will open an enlarged image of your desired cake. When you hover your mouse pointer over the individual image, you may see information like cake numbers and prices, and to close the individual images, click on the white cross at the top right of the page. However, when you hover your mouse pointer over the image, a black box will pop up containing a cake number, a cake description, and a price. Write this information down as you will need the cake number when you go to either the PRICE LIST, or directly to the ORDER NOW page.
If you are visiting this website from a mobile device (cellphone or tablet), the cake images themselves may not show the prices along with the cake number. In this case, please use the cake number and visit the PRICE LIST page, or if you are able, go to your desktop computer to place your order.
Looking for a particular cake or themed cake?
Use the Search page to find a particular cake or themed cake, and also look through the categories listed below. We have many popular themed cakes (for kids in particular) that are not necessarily named according to the words input into the search box. We bake cakes according to the most popular requests from our clients, in general, and also according to what is viable for us to produce.
How do I request customisations to cakes?
When you go to the ORDER NOW page, the instructions will take you to an order form. There you will be asked for information like AGE, and in the NOTES box you can write down certain preferences, like for example if you order a white two tier cake, that you would prefer not decorated (plain), this can be indicated there. Please note that we do have limitations that may need to be discussed by either calling the bakery directly, or requesting that you be contacted for discussion.
Can I put my own words on the cake?
Yes, you can request whatever WORDS, NAME, PHRASE or AGE that you would like on the cake or cupcakes, as long as it’s not unreasonably lengthy or will not fit. Follow the instructions on the Online Order Form.
How do I submit a high resolution image for Photo Cakes (also called Edible Image cakes, Printed cakes, or Picture cakes)?
When you follow the instructions on the ORDER NOW page, it will take you to an online form that provides for the opportunity to upload your own digital image to be imposed on the cake or cupcakes ordered. Please note that the image colours on the cake may not look exactly like the digital image you provided, as we work with artificial food colouring liquid, and striving for perfection is the best we can do.
How far in advance should I order? Cakes for an emergency?
Ideally, a week in advance will ensure sufficient time for us to confirm your order, but we are increasingly receiving orders within very short notice, which we can produce when the bakery is able to. Give us a call if you need a cake or cupcakes for an emergency.
Do you deliver cakes?
No. Cakes are for COLLECTION ONLY directly from the bakery at Menlopark, Pretoria at this time.
What happens to my personal information that I enter into your website?
See our Privacy Policy page for the details.
Do you offer gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan or allergen-free cakes?
No. All our cakes contain gluten, sugar and common allergens like dairy, eggs, gluten, wheat. Some may contain nuts. We will not be held liable for any adverse reactions to these ingredients.
Do you have a bestseller or favourites list?
We have arranged the bestsellers in each category, at the very top of each of the category pages (see the categories below).
Tips for Transporting my cake?
Please note that Cakes Net take no responsibility for the condition of the cake should it be damaged due to incorrect transportation or storage, however, some helpful tips, are to have the cake on a flat surface at all times. An ideal spot may be the front passenger floor of your car, with the air conditioning positioned directly on the enclosed cake inside its protective box. In case you have a hatch, you may decide to place the cake in the boot with the rear seat folded down to allow air-conditioning flow to the boot. Remember to take it easy and drive slowly around corners and sharp turns. On days of extreme heat, you may wish to refrigerate the cake or keep it in an air conditioned room. These are common sense tips, however some of our customers do ask these questions.
